ARC Weekly Report 3.7.19

The Weekly Report covers West Africa maritime security incidents, recent trends in maritime security in West Africa, Niger Delta militancy and ongoing issues in West Africa that affect shipping.

There have been reports of two maritime security incidents in the region this week – a theft on an oil tanker in Lagos Anchorage, and a report regarding an attempted boarding on a containership in Lomé, Togo. Despite several PMSCs reporting this second event as an “attack”, the incident in Lomé, Togo has since been confirmed as a false alarm after ARC confirmed with contacts in Togo.

Of particular interest this week are the following events:

  • Strike action at Nigeria’s ports.
  • Arrest of the vessel MT Apecus for crude oil theft. The vessel has been reported by the international press for being the vessel that 5 Indian crew members were kidnapped from earlier this year.
